That number indicates number of traders who make /who are standing there for buy/sell at that bid/ask price. If there is 3 in it and buy qty is 1000 that means 3 traders are standing in that 1000 order book at that price. It helps the tape watchers to know if some large volume and big players entering in the market or it is retail volume which is coming....

No number is not a multiplier....it means 3 guys make a total buy qty of 1000 at that price.

Volume is calculated from completed trades...not from the orderbook.
