The World May Run Out of Food by 2050

A Global population of 9.2 billion by 2050 would double our current food requirements, and vastly outpace the growth in our food production capabilities.

Extreme weather patterns will contribute to droughts that afflict the worlds poor. Food riots and war will break out. The demand for protein foods like meat, eggs, and fish will cause prices to skyrocket.

Research already predicts a massive die-off of coral reefs as ocean dead zones expand. Scientists have already said well be out of fish by 2050. Oh, and more than 2 billion people will face water scarcitywith an additional 5 billion facing moderate shortages.

Indian ambassador subjected to US airport 'pat down'

India's ambassador to the US, Meera Shankar, has been pulled from an airport security line and patted down by a security agent in Mississippi after attending a conference.

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...assador-subjected-to-US-airport-pat-down.html

The hands-on search last week also embarrassed the university officials who invited Meera Shankar, India's ambassador to the United States, to give a speech for an international studies program.

"It was a wonderful program, maybe the best we've had, (but) this stupid incident ruined the whole thing. She said, 'I will never come back here,"' said Janos Radvanyi, chair of Mississippi State University's international studies department. "We are sending her a letter of apology."

But a Transportation Security Administration spokesman said diplomats are not exempt from the searches and that Ms Shankar, who was wearing a sari at the time, "was screened in accordance with TSA's security policies and procedures."

Officials at the Indian embassy in Washington declined to discuss what happened.

A Jackson police officer escorted Ms Shankar to Jackson-Evers International Airport on Saturday for a flight to Baltimore, Mr Radvanyi said, and she was taken to a VIP waiting room.

The officer informed airport police that Ms Shankar was an ambassador, but she was later pulled from a security line and patted down by a female TSA agent.

The Clarion-Ledger newspaper of Jackson quoted witnesses as saying Ms Shankar was told she was singled out for additional screening because of her dress.

The TSA has come under fire for new security measures including body scanners and pat-downs that critics say intrude on the privacy of airline passengers.

Lessons from Iceland as its Recession Ends

Iceland has finally emerged from deep recession after allowing its currency to plunge and washing its hands of private bank debt, prompting an intense the debate over whether Ireland might suffer less damage if adopted the same strategy.

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/...temptation-for-Ireland-as-recession-ends.html

Iceland's president, Olafur Grimsson, irritated EU officials last month when he said his country was recovering faster because it had refused to bail out creditors mostly foreigners.

"The difference is that in Iceland we allowed the banks to fail. These were private banks and we didn't pump money into them in order to keep them going; the state should not shoulder the responsibility," he said.

The comments came just as the EU authorities were ruling out investor "haircuts" in Ireland, making this a condition for the country's 85bn (72bn) loan package.

TRAI wants 69 telco licences cancelled

Is it possible? All the bribes were paid to the Telecom minister. Now that he has been ousted, new people in his place want their share of bribes...

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended cancelling 69 telecom licences, the government said on Friday, confirming earlier media reports in a case running parallel to an investigation into one of the biggest corruption scandals to hit India this year.

The regulator has recommended cancelling 38 licenses of companies including the Indian joint ventures of Telenor, Sistema and Etisalat's for failing to meet network rollout requirements, the government said.

The TRAI also recommended cancelling 31 other licences "after legal examination," Minister of State for Telecoms Sachin Pilot said in a written reply to a question from an MP.
The cancellation recommendations include 10 licences held by Sistema Shyam Teleservices, eight of Telenor's India joint venture called Uninor, 14 of Loop Telecom, four of Aircel and two of Etisalat DB Telecom.

The 31 licences which the regulator wants cancelled after a legal examination include 13 held by Etisalat DB, 10 of Videocon Telecommunications, six of Loop Telecom and one each of Aircel and Sistema Shyam.

How Economic Weakness Endangers the U.S.

Call it the fractal geometry of fiscal crisis. If you fly across the Atlantic on a clear day, you can look down and see the same phenomenon but on four entirely different scales. At one extreme there is tiny Iceland. Then there is little Ireland, followed by medium-size Britain. They're all a good deal smaller than the mighty United States. But in each case the economic crisis has taken the same form: a massive banking crisis, followed by an equally massive fiscal crisis as the government stepped in to bail out the private financial system.

Size matters, of course. For the smaller countries, the financial losses arising from this crisis are a great deal larger in relation to their gross domestic product than they are for the United States. Yet the stakes are higher in the American case. In the great scheme of thingslet's be frankit does not matter much if Iceland teeters on the brink of fiscal collapse, or Ireland, for that matter. The locals suffer, but the world goes on much as usual.

But if the United States succumbs to a fiscal crisis, as an increasing number of economic experts fear it may, then the entire balance of global economic power could shift. Military experts talk as if the president's decision about whether to send an additional 40,000 troops to Afghanistan is a make-or-break moment. In reality, his indecision about the deficit could matter much more for the country's long-term national security. Call the United States what you likesuperpower, hegemon, or empirebut its ability to manage its finances is closely tied to its ability to remain the predominant global military power. Here's why.
