"If today were the last day of my live" is a very philosophical point of view how to move on.
Steve had his ideas and told it on the basic his past was. You and I have an other past, so we not should teach our children on that example, as our lives have been lived in different cultures and circumstances. We can take some point of that view, but it is not the view for our ongoing lives.
