I'm not sure it's so simple. When you open a demat account you have to indicate or find out from the bank/broker with whom they have tied up. When I opened my demat there was only NSDL.
I don't think you can casually transfer shares between CDSL and NSDL.
when u open a demat a/c (either with NSDL or CDSL), u will be provided with the relevant transfer forms also. in those forms, u can use inter-depository transfer forms to transfer a scrip from NSDL to CDSL or vice versa
