Is there anything illegal in holding a buy position and sell position in the same scrip (in two different accounts obviously!) in cases where the market (and the scrip) is likely to be moving in both directions particularly in case of day trading?

Use only 1 trading account. Buy and Sell to yourself i.e. just write the trade in your accounts / diary. (i.e effectively execute both trades at same price outside the market)
Execute the covering trades for the above open trades in the actual account.
This way you get same results and you have saved on 50% transaction cost and taxes
